L. Nowlin Gallery
Karen Zimmerley & John Mattson: Time and Place in Texas April 13 through May 22
Photographers Karen Zimmerley and John Mattson will be exhibiting "Time and Place in Texas" at L. Nowlin Gallery April 13-May 22, 2010. The opening reception will be held on Sat., May 1st, 2010 from 6-8p.m. As part of West End Gallery Night, an additional reception will be held on Thursday, May 6th, 2010 from 6-8 p.m. "Time and Place in Texas" is an ongoing photographic project exploring the rural, declining communities throughout Texas. The San Angelo-based photographers began this project in 1982, and have collected countless images and stories over the year s in places where people rely on the land for sustenance. The images undoubtedly evoke a sense of nostalgia, but more than a yearning for that which no longer is, the images acknowledge what once was.

One Swallow Doesn't Make a Summer
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Press Contact: cookandruud@gmail.com Cook & Ruud announces One Swallow Doesn’t Make a Summer, an exhibition of new and site-specific work in four vacant commercial spaces and a park in downtown Austin. One Swallow Doesn't Make a Summer April 20 – May 28, 2010 Installation locations: 210 Guadalupe, 416 W Cesar Chavez, 117 Lavaca, 233 W 2nd, Republic Square Park at 4th and Guadalupe One Swallow Doesn’t Make a Summer, curated by Cook & Ruud, takes its title from a speech given by former Austin mayor Kirk Watson about the development of the 2nd Street District a decade ago as the project had barely begun to take flight. Watson asserted, “One swallow doesn’t make a summer, and not even a dozen [development] projects makes a Great Downtown.” Since then, aggressive development has transformed this neighborhood, once filled with empty warehouses and parking lots, into a new city center replete with wide, tree-lined sidewalks and well-manicured storefronts. An initial burst of economic hope filled these spaces with high-end design shops and restaurants. Although the imminent international economic crisis of 2008 did not leave all these businesses unaffected, ambitious development projects continue to reshape the neighborhood culturally and economically. The recent history of this newly-minted neighborhood is both unique to Austin and relevant within a national context. Over the past two decades, countless U.S. cities have undertaken similar re- urbanization projects, and the recent economic crisis has left no city completely unchanged. Using vacant storefronts within Austin’s 2nd Street District as a platform, One swallow doesn’t make a summer brings together new and site-specific artworks to offer a variety of perspectives on the shifting cultural and economic landscape of this neighborhood and its relationship to a larger nation-wide experience. Artists include Justin Boyd, Paul Druecke, Mads Lynnerup , Leslie Mutchler, Carlos Rosales-Silva, Barry Stone, and Jeff Williams, as well as the collaboratives Circulatory System , Nancy Douthey & Jacinda Russell, Michelle Marchesseault & Virginia Yount, and Skote. ACP + Art Week Austin 2010Exhibition, Music, and Good Eats at Caffé MediciACP is collaborating with Art Week Austin to present a print show at Caffé Medici in west Austin. We will be showcasing the work produced by the participants in David Alan Harvey's The Photographic Essay workshop which took place during SXSW 2010.
As this workshop took place during SXSW the artist's photo essays will be paired with written descriptions of their workshop experience with the music of local singer/songwriter Trey Brown. Brown will perform a concert set of his catchy "cosmic folk" music as part of the evening's festivities bringing a hint of the exciting SXSW showcases to the event . We hope to share with you some of the same intensity and sensory saturation that our workshop participants experienced. Come enjoy Trey's set, party refreshments, and see some great photography from the week of SXSW curated by David Alan Harvey himself. About the ACP + Art Week Austin Event

MONTHLY MEETINGS
Our club holds monthly meetings on the fourth Thursday of each month, 7-9:30 pm, at the Lower Colorado River Authority (LCRA - Redbud Bldg.) at 3601 Lake Austin Blvd. We will be in Rooms 108N and 108S. Visitors are always welcome to attend any of our meetings. Due to a schedule conflict, the following meeting dates have changed:
In order to better acquaint you with our club routine and how membership is handled, we offer you the following information. The Austin Shutterbug Club normally meets every month except December, when we host our Annual Christmas Awards Banquet. We begin at 7:00pm with a welcome and few brief announcements. We then present the evening’s special guest speaker and program or workshop, generally relating to some form of photography. On alternating months, a competition is held in place of the program. Refreshments are served by our members during a 15 or 20 minute break that allows time to visit, share ideas, and meet new members and guests. We also get together each month for an interesting field trip or some type of photography workshop. Twice a year we have a photo scavenger hunt, which is really fun and challenging. The scavenger hunts generally take place in another small community near Austin. Guests are always welcome to our club, but we hope that you decide to join. When you become a member, you are eligible for an informative monthly newsletter, you can enter competition and have your photography critiqued by experienced photographers, go on field trips and have a vote when called for. If you decide to join, please see our Treasurer, Marlene Lebel. If she is not at the meeting, she can be reached at 512/626-5986. She will give you complete details on becoming a part of the Austin Shutterbug Club. For more information, visit: http://www.austinshutterbug.com/MonthlyMeetings/monthlymeetings.html |

Come to the Austin Photography Group meeting for the month of May! At this month's meeting we'll be hosting a presentation given by photographer and author Kirk Tuck on lighting equipment. The presentation will explore using everything from giant scrims for diffusing large light sources to lighting subjects up-close with an LED light source. Before moving on to become an independent freelance photographer, Tuck was the Creative Director of an advertising and design firm as well as a specialist lecturer and teacher of photography at the UT College of Fine Arts. Tuck has just published his fourth book on the subject, titled Photographic Lighting Equipment: A Comprehensive Guide for Digital Photographers, and we're pleased to have him speak to the group and provide us with a live demonstration of his ideas and methods. Of course, there will be time for individual discussion and showing prints at the meeting, so please bring a few prints to share that you particularly enjoy. As always, attendance is free, so come and meet with other fellow camera-enthusiasts for a way to share photographs and information, and to organize efforts toward Austin becoming a central hub for photographic activity! We meet on the third floor of Book People Bookstore at 7:00 pm on every second Sunday of the month. 603 N Lamar Blvd For more information and to RSVP, visit: http://www.meetup.com/photo-438/calendar/12930917/

Abelardo Morell sees more clearly and more deeply than most artists of his generation because he realizes that the surface of the visible world is merely the start of the processes of observation and introspection. His complex photography may begin with both tools of earlier centuries and technologies from throughout the history of the medium, but his vision is fully modern and works to both build upon and challenge the present parameters of the art. Morell immigrated with his family from Castro's Cuba in the early 1960s, spending his formative teenage years up in New York City. He received his BA from Bowdoin College and then graduated with an MFA in Photography from the Yale University School of Art in 1981. Beginning in 1983 Morell inaugurated his long teaching career in Boston at the Massachussetts College of Art where he remains a distinguished faculty member to this day. In the course of his long career in teaching and art he has received numerous awards and grants, including a Cintas grant in 1992, a Guggenheim Fellowship in 1994, and a prestigious Rappaport Prize in 2006.
Inspired by the classic camera obscura -- the optical innovation of blocking windows from outside light and turning entire rooms into cameras -- Morell began his unique process of changing spaces into innovative domains of projected imagery. The magical transformation of these entirely new realms of light resulted in significant bodies of photographs that have challenged and transfixed viewers for nearly two decades. Building upon this foundation, he has also presented audiences with additional modernist ways of seeing while expanding his inventive perspectives to include everyday rooms, objects, books and other illustrative media. As Morell himself has commented upon his comprehensive vision: "I like to suggest that what may be empty is not. When you feel alone there is actually a lot more of the world coming into your space than you think." Morell's photographs have been collected and shown in many galleries and museums. His works can be found in institutions such as the Museum of Modern Art, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Chicago Art Institute, and the Victoria & Albert Museum. Some of his many publications include A Camera in a Room (1995), A Book on Books (2002), Camera Obscura (2004), and his retrospective compilation,Abelardo Morell (2005). Abelardo Morell's web site. |
