The Intersections in Photography forum series is made possible by the UT Plan II Honors Program and is held at the Joynes Reading Room on the UT campus. We plan one or two IIP presentations per UT semester.
Julie Blackmon's book Domestic Vacations explores what she calls "the conflation of art and life" with images that are "both fictional and autobiographical". Inspired by 17th-century Dutch and Flemish paintings, Blackmon's colorful images of chaotic everyday life include an element of fantasy. Her work has been widely exhibited, and she was selected by American Photo as an Emerging Photographer of 2008 and as one of PDN's prestigious "30".
Cori Pepelnjak's ongoing project JoJo exemplifies her bold and compassionate approach to documentary photography. The project JoJo was awarded first prize in Center's (formerly Santa Fe Center for Photography) 2009 Project Competition. Her work has been exhibited at the Photographic Center Northwest in Seattle and IFP in St. Paul, Minnesota.
Dona Schwartz is an Associate Professor in the School of Journalism and Mass Communication at the University of Minnesota. Her photography explores everyday life and culture. The Icons of Photography No.11 lecture series brings Linda Connor to Austin held in the Blanton Museum of Art Auditorium on the UT campus.

May 2011
Thursday, May 5, 7pm - An Evening with Maggie Taylor and Jerry Uelsmann
The Icons of Photography No.10 lecture series brings a joint presentation by Maggie Taylor and Jerry Uelsmann to Austin. Once again to be held in the Blanton Museum of Art Auditorium.
Jerry Uelsmann holds a BFA from the Rochester Institute of Technnology -- where he studied with such celebrated photographers as Minor White and Ralph Hatteresley -- as well as joint MA degrees in science and fine arts from Indiana University. He began teaching at the University of Florida in 1960 eventually rising to Professor of Photography and Graduate Research -- a position from which he has only recently retired. He first came to fame in the 1960s and 1970s as a master black-and-white printer who created influential and challenging composite images from multiple camera enlargements. An early recipient of both a Guggenheim Fellowship and an NEA Fellowship, he was also one of the founders of the Society for Photographic Education and has remained one of the most dynamic teachers in the history of the art. His artistic style is unique and inspirational, and, having begun with his first one-person exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art in 1967, he has generated well over 100 individual shows across this country and around the world. He has influenced more than one contemporary generation of photographers while still continuing to create a prodigious amount of new imagery well into the current digital age. Jerry's web site.
Representative of one of the later generations of ethereal artists inspired by Uelsmann and others, Maggie Taylor has produced a significant body of imagery that is uniquely her own. Holding a BA in philosophy from Yale and an MFA from the University of Florida, she first distinguished herself in the field of still life photography. Starting in 1996, however, she began to embrace the newer technologies of the computer and the digital scanner to create resonant and mystical color collages that bear the stamp of her own poetic vision. Her "digital originals" combine scans of found objects and 19th century portraits with her own colored and manipulated accents and backgrounds, resulting in final collages that may combine up to 60 layers or more of imagery. The final images, although often as playful and provocative as that of Uelsmann's art, provide their own challenge and inspiration for each viewer to enjoy. Maggie's web site.
This is a rare opportunity to meet this outstanding artistic couple, to hear how they approach and execute their separate but inspirational visions, and how they continue to bring to vibrant life worlds and dreams that "mean different things to different people [and] make viewers feel or imagine something new."

Wednesday, April 27, 7pm - Intersections in Photography No.3
ACP's new Intersections in Photography series features influential photographers presenting their work and addressing a related theme.
The theme of our third forum is "Alternative Processes".
The panel for this presentation will be made of up of the following three prominent photographers.
- Jill Skupin Burkholder
- Robb Kendrick
- Dan Burkholder
The Intersections in Photography forum series is made possible by the UT Plan II Honors Program and is held at the Joynes Reading Room on the UT campus. We plan one or two IIP presentations per UT semester.
Jill Skupin Burkholder began working with photography in 1985 and studied
both traditional and digital photography, experimenting with various alternative
techniques. Her more recent work explores textures and surface dimension with
the bromoil and encaustic processes. She learned the bromoil process from Gene Laughter, a photographer who resurrected the technique by studying historical writings and interviewing members of The Bromoil Circle of Great Britain.
Robb Kendrick is a photographer whose work appears regularly in National Geographic. Kendrick's true passion has become wet plate photography, a historic photo technique used during the mid- 19th century. The tintype photos made with the wet-plate process are each one of a kind as they are all handmade from start to finish. He is also working in daguerrotype, ultra-large format and also combining audio and video with his tintype imagery.
Dan Burkholder was one of the first photographic artists to embrace digital technology in the early 1990s. Melding his unique vision with mastery of both the wet and digital darkrooms. Pioneering the digitally enlarged negative process in 1992, Burkholder has helped open doors for all black and white photographers interested in moving into the new electronic technologies. Dan's landmark book, Making Digital Negatives for Contact Printing, has become a standard reference in the digital fine art photography arena.
Since UT students have priority, seating for the public is limited to around 70 and is available on a first come, first seated basis. Friends and members of ACP will have advance notice.

An article about Bruce recently appeared in the New York Times Style magazine. Some more interesting reading here. This quotation comes from the article:

Friday, May 28, 7pm - An Evening with Abelardo Morell
The Icons of Photography No.6 lecture series brings Abelardo Morell to Austin. Once again to be held in the Blanton Museum of Art Auditorium.
Abelardo Morell sees more clearly and more deeply than most artists of his generation because he realizes that the surface of the visible world is merely the start of the processes of observation and introspection. His complex photography may begin with both tools of earlier centuries and technologies from throughout the history of the medium, but his vision is fully modern and works to both build upon and challenge the present parameters of the art.
Morell's photographs have been collected and shown in many galleries and museums. His works can be found in institutions such as the Museum of Modern Art, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Chicago Art Institute, and the Victoria & Albert Museum. Some of his many publications include A Camera in a Room (1995), A Book on Books (2002), Camera Obscura (2004), and his retrospective compilation, Abelardo Morell (2005).

Thursday, February 5, 7pm - I Can See for Miles and Miles at AMOA
ACP is pleased to have co-sponsored the Austin Museum of Art (AMOA) exhibition of the renowned Brazilian photographer Sebastião Salgado.
On this evening, AMOA held a panel discussion entitled I Can See for Mile and Miles with three prize-winning documentary photographers and photojournalism professors who discussed their careers and what photographs reveal about society, conflict, and change.
New ACP Board member Donna DeCesare, ACP Advisory Board member Eli Reed, and Dennis Darling participated in this informative presentation and fielded questions before closing.
Representatives of ACP were present to introduce our organization and answer questions before and after the main event.

Friday, November 21, 7pm - Slideluck Potshow Austin
We were pleased to co-sponsor the first ever Texas appearance of the
potluck dinner / slide show extravaganza known as the Slideluck Potshow. This international event combined the neighborly friendliness of a potluck dinner with an exciting audio-visual slide show.
All Slideluck shows feature established photographers (for example, Elliott Erwitt, Bruce Gilden have participated in previous shows; and Eli Reed was part of our Austin show) but mostly presents work submitted by local artists.
The show was so successful, look for ACP to co-sponsor annual return engagement(s) of this unique event.
